The three choice paths in this sequence are written to attract our top player types, from the design vision meetings - Expression, Fellowship, and Discovery.
//The structure of this is by design entirely free-form, and should have a broad 'net' allowing for a range of general inputs leading to ladel info, such as:
Ask [x] about... - ladel
Ask [x] about... - roland
Ask [x] about... - problem
Ask [x] about... - soup

On the counter is Pearl's Flute. It glows with white-gray wind magic, and has an unusual design. Different gems, medals, and talismans have been taped, glued, and nailed to its surface over the years.
On the wall behind the counter is a menu of services and items, the prices are covered by multiple layers of tape from years of impulse re-pricing.Next to this is a tattered calendar on the month of October.
Beyond the counter is the rest of her home, a sort of studio apartment with a bedroom, magic workbench and kitchenette in one circular room. Strewn above the dirty dishes in the sink is something glowing underneath. It is the Listen Pipe, for the FtS puzzle.

MDP OUTLINE
-the player is lost without a homex
-taryn offers a room if player helps them fix the anvilx
-Taryn's anvil is broken - their calendar on october and covered in dust, presumably here for yearx
-she gives you the looper to help fix itX
-But it doesn't work all the way. Have a magic problem? Pearl could help with that.
- you;'re from the outside, maybe you will help my aether??
Market area:
-So you head to the marketX,
- and then you talk to pearl for help.X
-Pearl has been meaning to do that for lmany falls?, but is too distracted and
disorganized to ever get it done where there's all this other stuff to do!X
-You talk to her about whether it's still october, and she shows you her calendar, also covered in dust.X
-You must complete a ritual.
- repair the scale.
--Lost the steps long ago, but real magic users can always figure it out forthemselves?
Lore:
Taryn needs Pearl. Why hasn't Pearl come and repaired the anvil themselves? Pearl has been meaning to actually do it for over a hundred years (or days?), but is so distractable, it'll be easier if you do it! What is pearl always distracted by then? Magic impulses of creativity. Doot doot dooos and la la las.<<<< Pearl noteX
Moving on
- Pearl talks about the cardinal points briefly?
- Echo/fae familar teaser - echo walks by
Are these characters stuck in their areas by their neuroses? Then what traps Taryn? Taryn has been too embarassed since the scale has been broken to emerge from the smithy. Also for many years. Maybe immortals? Or maybe it's months. Real stakes. Or maybe winter is coming any day now, and they'd both prefer not to risk it too. Fall!
Maybe this is a place where it's always fall, so winter is coming is a big ole excuse. You find out by Taryn flipping through a calendar that's nothing september, october, and november on repeat cycles forever.
It becomes obvious that the player's arrival is an impetus to break them of this cycle. Maybe if they do, winter WILL come and SOMETHING will happen. SOMETHING BAD GOOD? Theme: Avoiding the inevitiable. Maybe a b or c or d plot!
Player solves the scale puzzle, and pearl celebrates by teaching a spell: Listen.X
______________________________________________________
You need to teach the spell now. Go around town and listen for magic.
Objective: Find four elemental sounds.X
When you've heard enough, return to me.X
Listen rewards you with the four tempos. You can now hear Fire.X
(where'd pearl go?) - maybe an easter egg sentence that pearl forgot that entirely and fell asleep?
Pearl is playing a song, and echo is listening? Or echo helps from outside for some reason? Maybe Pearl's sleep song, to quiet her down?X
When player does, Echo, pearl's familiar, and the wisp, appears. Protecting pearl while she sleeps.X
--Echo teaches you a wind spell - for some reason? - introduces fae
- echo knows some things, and can answer your questions a bit more directly
-sawmill, tavern, library
- Echo deliveres the gramophone mission
- what for??? Why does the player care
-- you'll need the gramophones fixed in order to
ECHO IS A LORE DUMP/UNLOCK
- the elements, the Loopy 201 explainer, got it
- Echo describes Aether to you
-- The anvil and many other powerful devices run off of Aether energy here. Without something to tune the elements, Aether struggles to gather in large enough
amounts to fuel anything, or whatever???
-- echo lore dumps about the four corners of the soundiverse or whatever? They are listening to the Lost Sounds - the sounds of the seasons?? of time??? Ocarina of time crossover too imminent.... Sounds of winter?
-- ECHO teaches you STIR, after a puzzle? OR as a reward? X
--gramophones - uhhhhhhhhhhh
- tut this puzzle
- should require players to combine their skills learned so far?
- Puzzle to consider... Maybe breadcrumbing this? Shouldn't we explain cardinal points to 8 year olds? Yes. Yes we should.X
-
What's motivating the player externally? They are gaining spells, spells lead to.. stuff?
We can give them stuff? Or player motivations? Maybe repairing the gramophones
will resolve a rift between Taryn and Pearl? Or maybe the gramophones might
mean you can find your way home? Create a portal? The aether machine!
- Forge is fixed short cinematic -Smithy flashes green in the windows, maybe makes a song to followX
Player finds taryn overjoyed, reuinted with pearl? Or their fae. Yeah let's say their fae. The anvil releases the fae? She had forgotten them somehow? Spyder???
Spyder is also the creator aether element/stand in for AI, that makes it possible to generate random room! - spyder has already done the honors of furnishing your room!!!! Niiiiiice
Plots:
A plot - player needs a home, and maybe to return home? Maybe they're dead?
B plot - Time here - is the village under a curse or is this just the nature of this place? What happened to time here?
C plot - the aether machine and the gramophones
D plot - what do the fae want in this world
E plot - Pearl and Taryn can no longer see one another
What happened between Pearl and Taryn? Friends stuck in their loops. But let's get more specific. What were they building here together? Maybe something that went off and started this whole fiasco? Maybe a sort of time machine? Or aether experiment? The Machine.
Taryn and Pearl are cousins/family.
D plot: What do fae want in this world? To protect the village?
OR: Echo tircks you?
Thoughts:
- can we rename aether to something more fun, cool, and kid friendly?
Ideas: Blues, Jive,Flow
- monsters can be corrupted animals? Solve them and they turn back into friendly animals or objects? Lost things returning to whatever things?
- Maybe Fae are tied to their instruments, and fixing the forge brings them back awake? Taryn yells Spyder when the green flash happens.

Player finds themselves on the path outside of the smithy. Light streams from its windows, as the muffled sound of a hammer hitting Taryn's anvil clangs away at odd tinny notes.
On one side of the path is the wreck of the wagon.
Player paths to the door.

Concept: Spyder is an embodiement of creation - one that encapsulates creativty (art), magic(elemental forces), AI - and the confusion and interpretation that it requires. Its body is made up of a mash up of items and the magic of the combined four elements.
Problems this solves:
- There is currently no reason for spyder to be at the end of the game
- An exciting and unique design rewards the player, and intrigues them to want to know more about the world, leaving them with a lasting impression at theend of the demo
- The character continues to put our foot forward about a self-awareness and transparency about AI use in the game
- the confusing mush of his life is an example of Aether magic and its complexity - and confusing parts about AI interactions in the game can be explained in-world by blanketing them in the logic that they are Aether or Spyder interactions.
-This context around Aether gives parents a metric to customize settings, ir Parental restrictions around how much or if AI interactions are approriate for the player, but also kids and parents discussing Aether Events without having to get into the details of AI.
- Spyder's theme is in line with Taryn's character, who creates for the sake of creation, and whose creations are often nonsensical
- Spyder's theme is in line with the reward in his introduction, the room cusotmization, and his nature can explain its random object generation
- Allows us to visually introduce the idea of Aether-based technology, and give an explanation for who might have built the gramophones. This visual consistency will give the player more to look for when exploring the world for interactive elements.
- Introduces the instruments and fae are mysteriously bound to their companions. Possible hook for the future corruption system.
Visual Design:
Spyder is a six limbed (or normal limbed) fae of the Aether.
Aether is the element of crafting, combining, mixing, and creating.
On a thematic level, they represent all elements combined, so should
incorporate the four elemental colors/symbols.
Their skin/body is made up of a mash of items, lots of art supplies,
misc items appropriate to a rennaissance village, and items that feel
related to aether-tech (like the gramophones), such as Taryn works with and creates.
